Boy’s Room Mural | Residential Home | 2021
A family wanted to update their four year old’s bedroom but it was large and had unusual cut-outs. They asked that I create a mural to fill in the space and to give it a youthful, playful, and vibrant aesthetic. The solution had to work with the parent’s taste, and overall home decor, while still allowing the four year old some say in the design. In the end, both parents and child were thrilled!
The parent’s direction included keeping the background white, for consistency throughout their home, and creating a space for books. I gave the child a choice of one of the following themes: dinosaurs, shapes, plants or space. He agreed to ALL themes and added that he wanted worms as well. So with this unusual request, I designed a mural that showcased this diverse iconography, pulling it into a cohesive statement through a limited palette.
Details of the mural include a growth-chart brontosaurus to mark the child’s height, a satellite and alien, 2 giant dinosaurs, several stylized flowers, geometric shapes and 5 hidden worms wearing accessories. While there is a lot to see, the space isn’t overwhelmed due to proper spacing and areas of rest.
In addition to the mural, I hung 2 pieces of framed art that I had developed with a company a few years prior. The colors and themes fit perfectly in the updated room! You can see them placed to the side of the “Rexcellence" - the large orange dinosaur.
